[TriLUG] ATI projector hell

Okay so this is part of my ongoing saga of pain regarding getting
external monitors and projectors to work with my laptop. I have a Mac
Book Pro Core Duo 17" (not core 2 duo) (BTW OSX wankers can bite me). I
had it working to present to TriLUG albiet with the antiquated projector
for some reason it didn't like my projector that day. Then I upgraded
from Edgy to Feisty (hoping to get my projector to work)...big mistake.
I also tried with a crappy 15" CRT monitor I had lying around. I see
the DPMS stuff in the log the external monitor/projector and it acts as
if I have the external monitor working (in that the mouse will go over
to the other screen)...but I see nothing. I DO get output when I'm NOT
in X or when I first boot up. So I know the cable is good and the
graphics port is working. Just X hates me. Anyone have any idea what
I've done wrong (btw this is just one incarnation of my config file)?
(config is below)

OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6458 (8.36.5)
