I just got a Canon ZR700, myself. Ubuntu Studio contains software that
is beta at best, but definitely in no case is any of the video software
ready for regular use. Kino is the only one that didn't SEGFAULT
immediately when starting for me.
Its understanding of firewire is rudimentary. You are required to press
play on your camcorder, which is odd because other NLE software can
operate the camcorder controls via the firewire connection.
The tool is very spartan right now. If you just want to grab a video
off of MiniDV and transcode it to MPEG4 without editing, it's decent
enough for that, I suppose.
I love Linux and prefer it as my primary desktop OS, but I'm seriously
ready to just get another Mac at this point.
