[TriLUG] European Ethernet Cables for Laptop Travelers?

Can anyone in TriLUG speak from experience about what ethernet cables
one needs to be able to connect a Dell laptop to a typical European
university ethernet network?

I've got a student going to Mannheim for the fall and we hear that the
typical US twisted-pair RJ45 ethernet cables aren't compatible, which
also makes me worry that the physical layer signals may not be
compatible either.
