I run smartmon short as a cronjob every day and smartmon 
long every week. Run smartmon on it right now.

If you think you're having trouble with a disk, take it out 
immediately (if you don't have a full backup) (you don't 
want the disk to get any worse), make a dd copy and mess 
with that if you want to recover files.

if your disk has a scsi transport layer, these tools can 
help recover data
