Just a follow up, /etc/conf.d/net.example claims that all dhcpcd's send 
the hostname by default, so perhaps just removing the hostnames from 
dnsmasq's config will solve the problem?  Yep, it did.  Thanks Alan for 
pointing me in the right direction!
