I'm really at a loss.  It doesn't appear to be a GNOME issue like I was
thinking it might be, since KDE won't work either (oddly enough, wireless
doesn't appear to work in KDE...) I've started a thread at Ubuntu Forums:

Among other things, on the forum thread I note that I changed the
.Xauthority file to chmod 777, so it's not a permission issue there...but it
seems like there's some sort of permission issue somewhere.  Ugh.
