Vista makes the tunnel, and does so automatically. It's also very good
digging through a net to find a way out, even when the network is not wide
open to the world (i.e. firewalls, proxies in place, etc). M$ is supposed
to make this "feature" selectable in an upcoming service pack. I'm not sure
if they have done this yet or not.
There are more than a few people around here who think the answer is a Linux
desktop running virtual machines as-needed until applications can be moved
towards Linux compatibility. I'm doing everything I can to further this
idea. Sadly it's an uphill battle but Vista's uselessness is flattening
that hill bit by bit.
