You lose.

Macs do a cute firmware password setup: booting normally?  No password.
Put in the magic key sequences for Target Disk mode or boot from CD?
Password.  Helps funnel them towards the normal boot order.

Then it's "what happens if they pull the drive?"  Well, you lose.

Point is, you've already lost.  Any lifeline you cling to at that
moment is better than what the police will get you.
