Performance is a highly subjective question.  My web server running at home
on the cable-modem can support a thousand daily visitors - that's less than
one per minute on average...maybe 5 visits per minute during peak times.
If the average visit is a 5 pages, that is only 25 pages per minute.

So this really depends on what you expect your site will be doing?  Lots of
database crunching and heavy computations?  Or serving mostly-static content
with some PHP wrappers?  The requirements will vary greatly.  If the application
is financially important, my (fully biased) advice is to load test it _before_
deployment   :>
