For our EMC stuff, we have a CX700 and a CX320.

I have a FAS3040a (dual controllers). Since I've had it (about 1 1/2 years, I've had two disks fail, and a fiber card). Easily replaceable, and resulted in less than 5 minutes of downtime. Based off what we have now with EMC, ***I'd say about 3-5 years before it goes into extended support ...which you're going to pay out of the a** to keep it.***
If you're going iSCSI, I'd recommend running that traffic over a separate VLAN. What I like about NetApp is having a choice. We have actually had iSCSI, CIFS, and FC all at the same time...
I'd ask both NetApp and EMC what you would expect to pay once this goes into extended support.

Subject: [TriLUG] [Off Topic] Net App SAN reliability
Was on irc this week and was told the some members of TriLUG were using NetApp SANs with VMware. We are narrowing our search of SAN vendors to EMC and NetApp but for this thread I would like to get the opinion and experiences of NetApp. I am looking at the FAS 2040HA with dual controllers, using iSCSI until it proves not to be fast enough.
How often should we expect SAN failures to happen?
What should we expect for average and worst case recovery times after a failure?
If we have a service contract with the SAN, how much will it cost annually? What is the cost if we have 2?
Will a service contract provide us with any guarantees about recovery time?
How long can we reasonably expect to use a SAN?
TIA,
Chris
