I currently have my grandmother's computer set up with Ubuntu and KDE.
We made this transition after the Windows box another relative set up
ate itself. KDE is nice because all the components work well together.
Ubuntu is nice because the updater handles all the software, not just
the "system" components (like the Win updater). Also, it's much easier
for me to administer (I even have ssh+vnc set up so I can help her when
she gets confused).
