Wireless providers are also frequently slow even when you do have coverage. I'm in Durham (?!) and I have to maintain two internet connections (Time Warner and Clearwire) at the house to cover outages since I work from home. Between those two carriers and the data plan for my phone I'm paying well over a hundred dollars a month just to be able to do my job. From where I'm sitting some market competition would be pretty nice right about now.

I live in Garner... and the only 2 high speed carriers I'm aware of would be
Time Warner and AT&T, although
some wouldn't consider AT&T's DSL service high-speed.... U-verse isn't available
here.
I wasn't really counting the wireless providers because, imho, they tend to be
expensive and can have
spotty coverage.
Christopher.

Christopher, I don't know how things are where you live, but I live in Raleigh
and I have a few different (wired) high speed internet vendors to pick from and
another number of wireless high speed internet options to choose from. I didn't
like how my provider was treating me so I switched.
So it's not really true that there is a monopoly, but I will agree that the
current legal landscape makes competition damned difficult.
