Thank you for all the suggestions and help.

For now I was able to find a replacement drive and the machine is back
up and running. I will try the freezer trick to see if I can access
the data. Luckily I did have most of the data backed up on a server or
another box.

Hopefully these issues in Thailand will be resolved soon and lack of
drives/high prices will get back to normal.
