Ah, rather than pinging google (8.8.8.8), better perhaps to ping your
immediate upstream gateway, which you can determine with route(8) or
ip(8). My RR gateway is 75.177.128.1:

$ ip route
<snip>
default via 75.177.128.1 dev eth0

Since this IP is only one hop away, you're sure to be monitoring your
connectivity to your ISP, rather than your ISP's connectivity to
Google. One downside is your gateway IP might change if you're
assigned a new IP via DHCP, which may indeed occur if the modem has
been disconnected from the network for a while.
