I could also "hand-decode" the RTF file, since it is a "plain-text"
format, but was wondering whether anybody knew of something that might

That is a good point -- get the data to a machine where I have more
control, especially if it is a one-time process.

I suspect not.  I have a strong suspicion that he is planning on
continuous updates to both the mailing list and the letter template.
