The hub could indeed be underpowered. I was powering an external harddrive,
a Bluetooth adapter, the Wi-Fi adapter, and the RPi itself. It did not
occur to me that an underpowered hub might cause a device to overheat, but
now that you say that, it does.

I'll have to readjust this setup to see if the issue happens again.
