[TriLUG] OT: 16 Port Managed/UnManaged Switch

I picked up a Cisco SG200-50P 50 port Gigabit PoE switch for ~$400 a while
back. There are also 18 and 26 port versions that are closer to your price
range. My primary requirement was GigE, lots of ports, and PoE... but I
was excited to have another managed device with nice VLAN support and good
management capabilities (ssh IOS interface, snmp data per port, etc).
Unfortunately, I didn't read the fine print carefully enough. The SG200
series does *not* run IOS, does not provide counters for bytes per
port via SNMP,
or other sexy features one would expect from a Cisco switch. There's no
command line interface at all, only the web-based management portal.

In retrospect, it's still working fine, and for a (relatively) cheap switch
it meets my needs just fine. So, if you just want a nice POE switch and
don't care about the nicer management features, the SG200 series might be
worth considering. If you do care about the nicer features, you might
consider the SG300 line, which in retrospect is more what I was expecting.
They're still not proper IOS devices (eg. not as featureful as a 3xxx
series catalyst switch), but they're close enough at a reasonable price
point.

Happy hunting!
