Apologies for the late response ... I'm probably not aware of all of the
details, but have you considered using a different caching solution?
I'm with limited surfing capabilities as I trawl my email just now, but
I seem to recall some deb specific caching server. apt-cacher, maybe?
It's not the perfect answer if you're trying to integrate your caching
needs into a single solution (e.g., normal web browsing, apt), but I
have used something to this effect in various administrative and image
development tasks in the past.
