I think a big part of reception is placement of the antenna. High and
near a window seems like a plan.

Some antennas come with a built-in amplifier, right at the antenna,
with DC power delivered via coax. This means you get high signal on the
long coax, instead of amplifying noise that sneaks in through the coax.
