It's easier on my electricity budget to run a bunch of virtual machines on
a new-er-ish laptop.  I use an ancient I7 laptop with 8GB RAM I picked up
for $250 as an off-lease item.  I tried running some ancient iron a few
years ago and my electric bill went up $15/month!   So it's still a little
expensive up front, but my hardware pays for itself in electrical savings
eventually.
