CarolinaCon is a hacker convention. It's a very informal gathering of
tech-savvy
minds, in a convention-like setting (hotel meeting room with stage area
and seats),
with planned technical talks on different aspects of security. Some of
the talks
are serious, some are academic, some are just plain silly or juvenile.
There is
usually a mixture of security professionals, students, tech geeks, and
military.
Some of the presentations are in the form of "white hat" talks (how to
protect
systems) and some are more "black hat" (how to exploit systems). Alongside
the talks, there are usually side activities like "capture the flag" and
a lock
picking village.
I have been to CarolinaCon several times, and I learned something at
each one.

If you can spare the time to attend, CarolinaCon is definitely worth its
admission
price. I try to support them by buying a T-shirt even if I can't attend.
