I bought an Eclipse Fit Clip for $20 from Best Buy...uploaded files from my Linux laptop fine. Suits my purposes and has a screen I can read.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions.  I was going to buy a Sansa Fuze but they did not have any and the Sansa they did carry had a smaller screen
than the Eclipse.
