If your screen wasn't frozen after killing Xorg, I would have suggested that your USB may have done something weird, killing both your mouse and keyboard... But this sounds like a graphics card or driver lockup. Try reloading the various graphics related modules in your kernel. Any error messages in "dmesg" or syslog ? Bill
