To the original question:

For F/OSS  antivirus, I suggest ClamAV. There are a few free Windows 
based solutions.
ClamAV is open source, community driven, cloud based DB antivirus. It 
requires an internet connection to get the . Using it in conjunction 
with something like MalwareBytes is pretty effective.

The only caveat between the 2 is that ClamWin doesn't trip that "You now 
have antivirus" setting on Windows.

Another free alternative is AVGFree. However, it is heavy and bloated 
with Ads. Works well, just heavy.
