Some movies of that era were released in both B&W and in color
especially in 16mm and shorts in 8mm. It was a cost and distribution
consideration but since that's before I was born, all this is second
hand. Before VHS there was a pretty robust 16mm and 8mm trading
economy.
I saw it first on a B&W TV set and same for Star Trek. Boy what *I* surprised!
