I do not remember in ubuntu but in centos during the "tron
bikes" step of the boot process you can press ESC and it will show the
boot messages. You can try that.
Option 2 is during the grub menu screen to edit the boot
options. Per https://askubuntu.com/questions/248/how-can-i-show-or-hide-boot-messages-when-ubuntu-starts
something like "loglevel=4" or just remove "quiet splash" or any other
splashing entries should help you see any error message.
