Peter,

I have avoided upgrading for the very reasons that you give. There are just
too many reports of problems with 18.04.

I use Xubuntu 16.04 LTS. End of Life (EOL) for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is April,
2021. While Xubuntu bug fixes are stopping soon, Ubuntu's are not. By this
time, Xubuntu is pretty stable and unlikely to have significant bugs, at least
compared with U 18.04.

Here's the "secret:" since Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will continue to be updated, all
important security updates will continue as will other updates. So, the usual
updating will continue to 2021. Hopefully by then 18.04 will be better. At
least there will be time to think about it.

Caveat on 18.04: READ THE RELEASE NOTES. In particular, at my last reading,
one can NOT keep an encrypted /home directory. Whole disk encryption is the
default. One could encrypt /home *after* upgrading to 18.04.
