I seem to recall (back in my Ericsson days) forwarding emails to a
script using a .forward file or some other mail delivery agent filter
(sieve?) on my VPS.

We used this to make a script-bot where you could send emails from
a server to a (pre-smartphone) flip phone, and then reply from the
phone with commands that are interpreted by the script.
