I figured that usb_storage.ko had to be added to the initrd. Now the machine
boots with just a usbstick or a sata drive plugged into the usb connector.
It's slower than I hoped with many pauses on boot and shut down. As well editing
with vi has pauses. I assume things have to be read or written while I'm
editing. The connector is only usb 2.0, so I'm not going to have great speed
here, even if I get a fast usb stick.
Still I'll see what I can do to handle the latency. Any suggestions? (I don't
care about booting or shutdown. I hope only to do that once a year or so.)
Thanks joe
