I should do this via a serial console? o-me-o-mi, I haven't watched a bootup via 
a serial console in 20 years. I will have to look in deep storage for serial 
cables.

by eyeball, doing a mental diff of the screens for a crashed boot and a regular 
boot, it crashes as it's loading the SATA drivers. I assumed that it was trying 
to get to the sata interface of the usb stick (at least that's how I think a usb 
stick works).
