AFAIK, a single-cell Li-Ion battery only has two terminals. Multi-cell
packs have an additional terminal at each junction between cells. Bulk
current moves in both directions through the "end" terminals, and the
"inner" terminals allow for cell balancing during charging.

I'm basing this description on my experience with RC vehicle charging.
Big fat wires that can carry lots of current go to the ends, and wee
little wires go to the inner junctions. Your Mileage (and Hardware) May
Vary.
