I use openvpn. Your remote laptop gets an IP in your home network. You
appear to be at home (maybe all vpns do that).
The setup script is a bit mysterious and cryptic, but I got it to work
eventually. This was back about 15 years ago, when openvpn was the only
thing. I set the certificates to expire in 10 years and forgot about them.
I was miffed one day to find unexpectedly that openvpn, which had worked
reliably for so long, just didn't work anymore. I just reran the setup
script to make new certificates that expired in another 10 years.
My son suggested Wireguard, but I couldn't figure out how to set it up (I
couldn't figure out how it worked either). It was just easier to generate
new certificates for openvpn.
