ifup and ifdown did the trick, thanks Fred and That one Guy.  It's BIOS
level.  A dell Inspiron 3200.  I close the lid and the little button
sends it into nap time.

I'll check and see if I can disable it in BIOS next time I restart.  I
would rather have control over when it goes to sleep.  if I do apm -s,
will it come back when I touch a key?
