I recently tried Mondo Rescue for cloning servers. It is truly awesome
at this task. It would also be great for disaster recovery. I have a
question though. I am using the tape/floppy method and I would like to
restore individual files/directories from tape without rebooting. If we
can get this working -- however clunky -- I think that it might be a
good thing. That way if a remote site needs disaster recovery due to
hurricane/flood/hardware failure we can easily have them boot from
floppy and put in their last tape. In 30 minutes they'd have a running
server (assuming similar hardware). The problem is we if can't use
Mondo for daily backups if we can't restore individual files/directories
remotely (after someone onsite puts in the appropriate tape, of course).
I thought that Mondo used afio so I tried afio -t to get a listing of
what is on the tape and it does go out and try to read the tape but no
go. I get the following errors:
afio: "/dev/st0" [offset 6]: Fatal error:
afio: "/dev/st0": Unrecognizable archive
