Static IP (was Re: [TriLUG] Hopefully not so easy...)

Hee hee. "rant reply on." I liked that one.

Ok. let me see, $600/$50hr = 12 hours. (I'm assuming we all make at least
$50 an hour. Or, our time is worth $50 an hour. Considering we are all
engineers or admins of some sort, that's probably not that far fetched.)
So, if you spend more than 12 hours fiddling with your setup you are
wasting your time and money. I figure Chris spent more than a day or two
fiddling with his setup. Probably even called the help desk at his ISP and
set on hold for a bit as well.

Also, if you choose to use cable and put yourself in a difficult position I
can't help you. There are plenty of ISP's out there which will give you
static ips and high bandwidth for $50 a month.

BTW, Chris no offense kid. I wasn't really ranting at you. I was just
trying to convey my frustration when I see people doing stuff the hard way
when much simpler approaches should be obvious. I guess I jumped to a
conclusion. Don't mind me. I'm only on this list for the abuse
opportunities. (Gawd, I hope he doesn't take me serious on that one.)
Have a good one.

Um, no. It doesn't always only cost an extra $5 a month. With Road
Runner, it costs around an extra $50 a month. That's $600 a year, which
is -real- money.

You're simply assuming that static IP's are easy to come by. They
simply aren't. Not all of us have access to an ISP who only charges a
pitance (or gives it away) for a static IP. I, for one, don't have
that option. I pay through the nose for my static IP.

As have I. And it's been a looooong time since I could get a staic IP
for cheap. It looks like Britsys gives you a static IP for a resonable
sum. Great. Good for you.

Assumptions. You can either spend the money (I know Chris uses Road
Runner), or do the work. Sometimes it's a lot cheaper to do the work.
