Take a look at CAJUN; you can find the project on Sourceforge. It is for text
consoles or serial displays and there is support for IR stuff. I'm using an
older version of it on an embedded PC in my car with mpg123 to play the music. I
don't use an IR remote, though. I modified it to use a keyboard on the console
because I've been too lazy to hook up a nice keypad.
