Cool beans that you fixed it.

And yeah, I'm not a fan of upgrades.  I like to get rid of the cruft
from previous versions by doing the following:

  1) store all the data I care about in a separate /home partition

  2) tar -czvf /home/etc_copy.tar.gz /etc

  3) Do a *fresh* install of Red Hat being careful not to over- 
     write /home

  4) install any necessary extras (MatLAB, etc.) and then

  5) copy any custom config files from the tarball of etc done in 
     step #2
