I've had good success politely emailing the sender back, telling them 
that the file was sent in a proprietary format, but if they could 
export the file to something more open I could read it.  It helps to be 
familiar enough with the apps in question (and their export 
capabilities) to be able to instruct the sender as to how to export the 
file to an open format.
