Sean,

Have you tried Runescape?  www.runescape.com.  It's not necessarily open
source, but it is playable for free.  The game is similar in style to
the Ultima games, and it is massively multiplayer.  The games's creators
are constantly throwing in new features, so it is getting better.  One
suggestion, if you want to try this game, make sure that you have a Java
VM plugin that is working correctly, first.
