Look at "top".  Sort by the various memory columns.  Press < and > until
it is sorting by "VIRT" for total virtual memory a process is using,
or RES for the amount of resident (non-swapped) RAM.  You might also
be interested in SHR, which is shared memory (memory that is used by
this process and another process, like in some common library).

Are you using a graphical environment?  Some desktop environments like
KDE are a little more RAM-hungry than others.  Gnome is medium-hungry.
Some others like plain X with fluxbox are a lot less hungry.
