Slightly unrelated, but I have seen the channel setting make a
difference when dealing with monitor mode and aircrack-ng. No solid
proof for or against though on the MAC setting.

I kind of got the feeling the AP setting was being ignored too. IIRC,
the essid was what really made the difference. I think what I ended up
doing was defining every option possible for the access point I wanted
to connect to. Admittedly, I never worked with same SSID, different
MAC access points, but I think it might be worth a shot to set every
value and see what happens (if you are unsure of some of the settings,
check out iwlist. Yeah, asking the computer what you should be telling
it... doesn't make much sense). I'm willing to bet my success was due
in part to luck, but I'll do everything I can to help you out (and
maybe learn now what I should have back then!) I'll pull out my old
router when I get home and take a look at that one too.
