Like Jeff said...
You don't need a new distro. You need a new desktop.

"apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" is your friend.

Keep all of the stuff you installed, keep all of your configurations, 
and don't fret over downloading a new distro. Just install another 
window manager. If you want to purge unity, then just "apt-get remove 
--purge unity".

Simple, huh? You can thank Debian for the simplicity. You can thank 
Canonical (and Apple) for the Unity headache.
