[TriLUG] OT: remote controlled antenna rotator

I got a cheap Chinese DVR called View-TV that is, well, functional. It has plenty of quirks, but it does work. The channel display on the front of the unit is an index of the channel you're on rather than the channel number. For example, "10.1" is the first channel in my lineup, and when I'm tuned to that channel, it displays"C001". 10.2 shows up as C002, 25.4 shows up as C007, etc. So the front display is all but useless.
The DVR function is purely channel (the real channel like 10.1) and time. You can see the program name in the program guide, but in the DVR function, you only see the channel and time. I'm pretty sure that it loses the DVR program if power goes out. It works well with a memory stick, or with a server-class hard drive on a USB adapter (that's what I use). The spin-up time for consumer-grade HDs can cause problems.
I can play the recorded files on the View-TV, or copy them to a computer and play them with VLC.
There appears to be a serial port (JTAG, maybe) on the circuit board. But I haven't had time to explore that yet.

Back to the title subject - Antenna rotators... Some TVs (Samsung, for instance) will only wipe out all stored channels and then learn all new channels, so if you have an antenna rotator, you would have to re-learn channels every time you move the antenna. Some other TVs will allow you to add channels to your lineup without erasing what's already there.
Those cheap antennas with the built-in rotators are really scraping the bottom of the barrel quality-wise, but they're good enough for a lot of situations, especially in an urban or suburban area.

46 channels with viewtv rotating antenna (directional). Like $37. Remote to
rotate but no real need where I am as only miss a few channels. 10-20
channels of shopping etc I won’t watch probably; but cable package we have
is even fewer useful channels. May buy cheap dvr as tvguide channel exists.
Gil bought 400$ dvr with 4 channel recording and lifetime guide.

I don’t actually watch much tv but fairly neat. Tried to get into mythic
and stuff before too much hassle.
