I have one of those multifunction front-panel doohickeys that goes in a 
5.25" bay.  It has audio jacks, various memory card readers, and USB 
ports.  It has a USB type A male inside the case for the readers and 
ports.  It's not that uncommon to see a mobo or PCIe USB adapter with 
type-A female ports inside the case.  Here's one example.
