yes, for a particular definition of "usually", ie usually == only for a
specially prepared linux distribution install device.

the target for the install of the boot files. In the e-mails, it's been a sata
drive connected to the sata bus, or the same sata drive connected to the usb
bus, or the same files on a usb stick connected to the usb bus. The target
becomes the boot device on the machine of interest

yes. I can boot a live usb stick on this machine. (first e-mail)
