   I keep GParted on a thumb or CD to check any disk I plan to use.
It lets me see all the partitions on the old drive and delete them first.
You can format the drive but I prefer to let the OS of choice
do that.

   If you find Ubuntu(Gnome) to be a bit slow you may want to look at the
XFCE4 version;
